Thought of the week

Well the biggest event on the golfing calendar is getting a little bit closer and this week the American Captain, Davis Love III added 3 of his 4 Captains picks, as expected all three players are a very strong addition to the US team of Matt Kuchar, JB Holmes and Rickie Fowler who may well be the surprise of the three considering his recent form, but saying that in the heat of the battle at the Ryder Cup all recent form tends to go out of the window and its those who can handle the pressure.

The 4th and final pick will happen after the last FedEx event, thus completing the US team.

Meanwhile here at Falmouth it has been an eventful week with Peter Brierley our Club Captain holding his day last Saturday in which our members supported his local charity, Age Concern UK ( Falmouth Branch ) to the sum of £1800.00. This was followed on Tuesday by our Lady Captain, Carol Allan having her day for the lady members.

All of whom had to dress in Black & White for the event and then reverse their attire for the evening presentation and meal, sadly for Carol though she was unable to get her competition finished as thunder, lightning and heavy rain of biblical proportions forced the last 5 groups from the course early.

What followed for the next 12 hours was rain like we've never seen before with Falmouth & Penryn suffering with up to 3 inches of rain falling, while most of the country sweltered in temperatures at 30 degree plus.

This put huge pressure on the groundstaff to get the course ready for yesterday's Pro Am event, but work a miracle they did and with the sun finally reappearing the course was in amazing condition considering what we went through only hours early.

Two Cornish pro's topped the individual leaderboard with 5 under par 67's, so we'll done to Richard Sadler from Killiow & Richard O'Hanlon from St. Kew. As for the home pro a 71 for 1 under par secured 5th place on which is added pressure due to everyone always expecting you to win on your home track, which I feel is always the hardest thing to achieve.

Thanks for reading, but please remember that the groundstaff are working on the Autumn / Winter course maintenance programme next week, so temporary greens will be in play for some of the week.

Winter golf

Get better whilst everyone else gets worse...

It's getting towards the end of the golfing season, the light is fading, and the weather is slowly getting worse. The fair weather golfers will go into hibernation until sometime in the spring (or the odd nice day), and only the truly golf mad will stay. But what about those of you who want to play but are on the fence?

There are many different ways to make the most of the bad weather and freezing temperatures that will be upon us in the near future, such as:

  • Getting Lessons: We are very lucky to have our own studio, you don't have to be on the course for 4 hours to get better, why not spend that little extra money, and a lot less time, and get a lesson? You won't just be keeping your golf game fresh, you will be improving.
  • Getting Custom Fit: Custom fitting serves two purposes in this instance:
    1) Having the best equipment possible for your game, and getting rid of any equipment that might be costing you shots (it's not always your fault)
    2) Keeping you interested - No one likes to say it, but it's true, new golf clubs make you want to play golf. We're not saying you should replace anything that is suited to your game, but replacing what isn't so great, or that you don't like, will certainly make you want to play no matter the weather.
  • Practice: Obvious but neglected - Almost no one wants to spend 4 hours on a golf course when it's wet and cold, but guess what? You don't have to. Even if you spend only 20 minutes on the range, or 15 minutes putting, you are practicing and you will improve if you do it regularly. You don't want to burn yourself out so practice until your bored/tired/fed-up, then you can leave the course knowing you're on the way to improving.
  • Get The Right Gear: Another obvious yet neglected part of winter golf - You can't expect to enjoy a round in winter if you're cold and wet and have no means of staying warm and dry. Modern waterproof clothing is light, breathable, comfortable, and most importantly you can swing in it without feeling restricted. The same goes for waterproof gloves/shoes etc. If you haven't tried on waterproof gear for a couple years or more, you'll be surprised how far it's come.

We are sure there are some other good ways to keep improving this winter, please get in touch by clicking here and let us know how you will be improving your game throughout Winter; alternatively if you would like more info on the what has been mentioned, or would like to book a lesson/fitting, then please follow the same link, we would be happy to help.
