Competition news

Festival Week is over for another year, and I can’t remember such a good one.

What a week it was! in all my years here at Falmouth I can’t remember such fantastic weather, from the Seniors Open on Tuesday through to the last day on Saturday with the 4 Ball Team Stableford, it was sun all the way. The whole week was greatly supported with two days completely full and other days nearing a full field, so thank you to everyone that supported the events throughout the week.

Simon and his staff did an amazing job on the course, it was in immaculate condition, and thanks go to them for some very early starts and late evening finishes, in order to stay out of the way once the tournaments commenced. In last week’s newsletter we had the results from the first three days play, so here are the results from the remaining four days.

Our Major of the Week – The 11 Hole Classic

This was won by Robbie Edgson with 26 points, just pipping Anthony Deacon who also recorded the same score, but Robbie claimed victory with 6 points on the last 2 holes.

Enclosed is an image of Robbie Edgson with his prize of a pair of FootJoy Contour Casual golf shoes.

Thursday 15th – Florida Scramble

This event sadly was not so well supported, but nevertheless, the teams that took part enjoyed the format. With all four players teeing off like a normal scramble, the person’s drive you then selected dropped out from the next shot, this continued thereafter on all of the remaining shots, with only three chances at each shot, making the event a tad harder than a normal Texas Scramble.

The team that triumphed was Paul Martin, Larry Lynch, Nick Brown and Mr N. Mills, a visitor with a team score of 55.15, with four shots to spare over Ryan Job, Stevie Owen, Charlie Scorse and David Franklin on 59.90.

Friday 16th – Texas Scramble

As we entered the last two days, both of these events were the ones that were very well supported, with a standard Texas Scramble we had a field that approached 120 players, once again glorious weather greeted the competitors on what was so far the hottest day of the week. Needless to say drinks sales in the shop went through the roof, with us struggling to keep the fridge topped up.

The top team on the day was a group of visitors from Tehidy and Truro golf clubs, Ron Ignaczak, Martin Trewhella, Neil Hocking and Steve Retallick with a team score of 53.15 beating the home grown crew of Marek Churcher, Rob Eccleston, Andy Parry and Mark Butland on 55.00.

Saturday 17th – 4 Ball Team Stableford

With our biggest field of the week, 148 golfers battled their way around the course in stunning conditions, probably the hardest format by making sure that you always have three players picking up points on each hole. The team that came top of the pops consisted of Ian Churcher, Peter Chambers, Paul Kneebone and Grant Nicholls with 124 points. They won by 4 points from Stevie Owen, Ryan Job, Charlie Scorse and Matt Morrison.

The sweepstake Nearest the Pin competition on the 4th hole was won by Zac Annear with a distance of 9 feet and 1 inch, Zac’s prize was a Cobra Cart Bag worth £135.00, not too bad for a £1 bet.

After the final presentation of the week, an evening Bar-B-Q took place on the patio - huge thanks to Dougie and all his staff in the kitchen, as well as Richard and his team behind the bar for looking after everyone so well through the week.

Afterwards the members took to the dance floor and were entertained by band, Blues Talk Revival until the late hours.

It also seems that the shirt I choose to wear at the presentation evening fell off the back of the lorry, as member Chris Giles had the same one on, but did it matter? Of course not we had a quick photo and a laugh about it.

Another Happy Customer

Another member picked up his brand new set of Mizuno golf clubs this week after being fully fitted during our Mizuno Demo afternoon a couple of weeks ago. Here is Steve Perry with his JPX900 Hot Metal irons.

Steve’s been looking forward to getting back on the golf course, and has given himself a great incentive by purchasing some new sticks!

Festival Week Raffle

During Festival Week we always run a raffle with the winning tickets being drawn on Saturday evening after all the presentations have been done.

This year 1st prize was a Bushnell V4 Jolt distance unit and this was won by Mark Woollerton, a visitor who played on Saturday in the 4 Ball Team Stableford. The 2nd Prize was a Sun Mountain H2N0 Waterproof Cart Bag and this was won by Matt Morrison. My thanks go to Debbie, my other half and Jenny Storey who helped sell the raffle tickets through the week.

US Open Sweepstake

The second major of the year is now over and thanks go to everyone who purchased a ticket in the sweepstake, once the tee times were allocated we could sort out the ticket numbers you had drawn to the starting order. With Brooks Koepka running away with the event on the back 9 holes for a four shot win over Hideki Matsuyama and Brian Harman. The interesting fact about the top 4 players is that they all teed off within 11 minutes of each other on the first day from either the 1st or 10th tees.

Sweepstake Winners:

1st - Ian Churcher with Brooks Koepka & won a £70.00 Pro Shop Voucher

2nd Equal - Steve Jones with Hideki Matsuyama & won a £35.00 Pro Shop Voucher

2nd Equal – William Sercombe with Brian Harman & won a £35.00 Pro Shop Voucher

4th – Peter Chambers with Tommy Fleetwood & won a £16.00 Pro Shop Voucher

Keep your eyes open for the Open Sweepstake to come, with that next major only a month away.
