Open Championship 2017
It looks like the decent weather has returned after last week's downpour, at the moment it looks like we're heading for a typical Cornish summer. Some amazing days with no wind, lots of sun and stunning views, followed by days when you wouldn't even stick your nose outside the door! But you golfers are a hardy bunch and come what may, you still head out in all conditions to play this addictive game. We are now also in the lead up to the Open Championship, which is some three weeks away. Starting today at Portstewart is the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in association with Rory Foundation.
This will see all the big hitters prepping, ready for the following week's Scottish Open at the Dundonald Links. Then this is followed by without doubt the biggest golf event in the world and the one that every Professional golfer wants to win, the Open Championship at Royal Birkdale. It's difficult to see who's the favourite at this moment in time, but from the home-grown talent and after winning at the Paris National last week, Tommy Fleetwood is on a roll, however over the next couple of weeks we'll see who is in hitting form and those who are hitting it 'out of bounds.'
New in this week
Motocaddy have launched their latest electric golf trolley this week, the S5 Connect, which we have now in stock. So what's new with this trolley? Well, it has a built-in GPS system which via the App has 36,000 courses available to download to the trolley.
You will be able to bring up which hole you are playing, the par and yardage to the front, middle and back of the green.
You will also be able to see notifications for missed calls, texts, e-mails and apps. For a demo please pop into the Pro Shop and ask a member of staff to take you through all that this new high tech golf trolley can do.
Last week in France
Last week I was fortunate enough to join up with fellow Professionals, Rodney Richards and Richard Holt. We travelled to Deauville in Normandy to look after 23 golfers from Austria and Germany for a week's coaching and golf around some of the courses on the northern coast of France. We stayed on site at the Hotel du Golf Barriere which has three 9 hole loops. After some early morning coaching we then spend the rest of the day with the clients on the courses coaching and giving tips and advice as we went around. We were very lucky with the weather, but unfortunately, it rained on our day off when we visited the little seaside town of Honfleur.
Having spoken at length with Rodney who arranges these trips it is something that we are looking at in the future to open up to members of golf clubs around Cornwall, so if you're thinking of a golfing holiday but without all the hassle of arranging it, pop in for a chat. Below are some of the photos of our week together. Rodney has his plans in place for next year and it looks like Northern Ireland, Belgium or even a trip to our home County of Cornwall. It's early stages at present, but it could be either Northern Ireland or Belgium in June and possibly Cornwall in August. So, if the Cornwall golfing holiday takes off you may see some visiting golfers from Austria and Germany next year visiting us here in Falmouth, like Rodney did with a previous group back in the summer of 2014.
Get into Golf
This week saw the start of my second session of 'Get into Golf' classes with four new golfers. Three of them have already attended my Short Game Session, learning the secrets of pitch and run shots, pitch shots and putting. This was finished off with learning the basics of the 7 iron set up. The next session is helping them to understand the fundamentals of the full golf swing.
If you have anyone interested in the next group of lessons then please get them to make contact with us here in the shop.
Clubhouse NewsAfter last weekends issue with the projector, we are back up & running for this weeks deciding test between the British Lions and the New Zealand All Blacks. So if you would like to watch what will be an amazing game of rugby on the giant screen, then pop up to the golf club for the kick off at 830am. You could even stock yourself up with one of Dougie's famous breakfasts at half time, shame I'm going to be out coaching.
Golf Club ResultsWe've had plenty of competition golf taking place lately. The first competition was the re-playing of the John Rose Stableford, which we postponed earlier in the year due to poor weather conditions. One gent who was quite happy with the re-arranged date was our biggest in-house Chelsea fan, Gary Wall, who amassed 43 points to pip Matt Morrison to the trophy by 1 point. Rumours floating around the golf club, say that Antonio Conte is aiming to be Gary's golfing manager, but whether the 10% bonus that Gary's offering is big enough, well - we'll just have to wait and see.
Last Saturday was the Frank George Salver, played in quite tough, breezy conditions with only three players breaking the 40 points plus barrier. The first of those was Grant Nicholls, who just lost out to Ryan Job on the back nine score, but top of the pile this weekend was Paul Martin with a stunning 42 points. Sunday saw the playing of our premier mixed event, the Royal Duchy Bowls.
This tournament is a 27 hole Mixed Greensomes and with 20 pairs playing, plenty of prizes were on offer. The top three spots were all claimed by Falmouth members and we were grateful to Mr Barry Taylor from the Royal Duchy Hotel in Falmouth who presented the prizes. A special mention was made to past Captain and President, Terry Dickinson, who had a Hole in One on the 2nd in the afternoon. Many comments were made on which club Terry used, from a driver down, but having been confirmed by Terry himself it was a well struck 6 iron that look great all the way.
King of the Course - Mr Terry Dickinson 1st Place - Chris & Rebecca Beer with 45 & 19 points for 64 in total 2nd Place - Scott Pedlar & Lis Thomas with 37 & 23 points for 60 in total 3rd Place - William McLean & Lynne Dickinson with 38 & 22 points for 60 in total
