Greetings golfers,

I hope you've all had a fantastic week on and off the golf course and welcome to another exciting edition of the weekly newsletter, bringing you up-to-date with all the latest news and gossip.

The Open

What an Open Championship that was

Well last week the Open Championship returned to Royal Birkdale, and what a tournament is was, the scoring was outstanding on what must be one of the best links courses in England. It was a fair challenge to all the world’s top golfers, but also one that made you plot your way round.

Following the third days play the winner always looked like it would come from either Jordan Spieth or Matt Kuchar, but with Jordan’s experience he was always the slight favourite, but no lead no matter how big it can be is sometimes never enough in a major. With Spieth starting the round in what can only be described as iffy, Kuchar had caught his playing partner early on and then the players exchanged blows over the next 9 holes. But the turning point came on the 13th when Spieth hit from the tee, what can be only described as an ‘ off the planet shot', he was very fortunate to find the ball and take an unplayable drop back onto the practice area.

He then made what can only be one of the best bogey’s ever, to keep his Major chances alive, but what followed in the next four holes won him the third part of golfs grand slam with a birdie, eagle, birdie, birdie run. Spieth finally won by three shots from Kuchar, but how things could have been so different. The final major of the year is just a couple of weeks away with the USPGA Championships, and will Spieth become the next player to win all four majors and join the list of Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and of course Tiger Woods. Or will Rory pip him to it as he only requires the green jacket from Augusta, but my money is on Spieth before Rory at this moment in time.

3rd with Haotong Li was Martin Almond and wins a £25.00 Pro Shop Gift Voucher

4th with Rafael Cabera-Bello was Angela Cortis and wins a £8.00 Pro Shop Gift Voucher & with Rory McIlroy was Paul Kneebone and wins a £8.00 Pro Shop Gift Voucher.

Look out for the USPGA Sweepstake which we will be starting this weekend in the Pro Shop, again at £ 1.00 per player. The draw will once again correspond to the first days teeing off order, the only slight alteration will be if it’s a two tee start and if so the draw will be like the US Open.

A busy few weeks

It’s been a busy few days playing again and supporting the West Region PGA in my role as Captain.

First of all it was the Woodbury Park Pro Am, just outside of Exeter.

Sadly the weather beat us that day with play being abandoned while my team were on the 11th Green, the rain started coming down on the 6th fairway and continued for the next 90 minutes until play was no longer possible with all the greens under water.

My thanks went to everyone that played that day because over £300.00 was raised for my two charities this year, the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

We will try again on the 23rd August with the re-arranged date.

Competition news

Golf Club Results

Last Saturday we had the Captain’s Fun Day with a Two Ball Better Ball Stableford event taking place, the scoring was extremely high and grabbing first place was the pairing of Darren Horton and Paul Caunter with 50 points ! ( ouch ). The next three places were all tied on 44 points and all going down to the back 9 scores – Ian Churcher & Steve Thomas, then Ian Renshaw & Rob Tongue and finally Dennis Nicholls & Mike Watmore.

Sadly Wednesday’s Seniors Vet’s Trophy was postponed due to the weather forecast and will be re-arranged for a later date.

That's got some face on it

How do you compare?

You will have heard us mention the importance of the ‘scoring zone’ on various occasions, but we can’t stress enough just how vital this area is to lowering your scores. Take a close look at these up-and-down charts below:
