I hope you’re all looking forward to the last major of the year with the USPGA taking place in Charlotte this weekend. Will Jordan pip Rory to complete the Grand Slam of Majors? Jordan only needs to win this week to complete the set after winning the British Open.

You will see that BBC 2 has coverage of the event rather than Sky this year, but it will be available through the Red Button at first and then later in the evening on the normal BBC 2 channel.

Simon Johnson

As most of you will have read through the golf club e-mail or heard by word of mouth, Simon Johnson, the Head Greenkeeper is moving on to pastures new. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Simon all the best for the future and thank him for all his hard work that he’s put into the golf course over the past 10 years.

I am certainly going to miss having him around, because he and I go back a long way, having played golf as Juniors at Tehidy Park, many years ago, but also working with him here at Falmouth. It’s been great to work closely with a good friend, and he’ll leave a big hole in the golf course (lol!). Thanks Simon.

Red Arrows Display

Well what an evening Falmouth had on Wednesday! Things didn’t look too good for the Arrows during the day as we had to close the course early thanks to another heavy downpour which flooded the greens - this summer weather is great!

However, come late afternoon the skies cleared and the sun came out. Most of Cornwall descended on the area, and we were pleased to see many of them at the Golf Club. Richard, our Bar Manager, set up a bar on the 15th Tee and Simon and the staff roped off the greens around the back loop to make sure no damage was caused.

At about 5.30pm everyone wondered up to the 14th Fairway and 15th Tee to watch the display and dead on 6.15pm the Red Arrows zoomed in over Falmouth for another stunning display, roll on next year.

USPGA Sweepstake

The draw has now taken place and it’s up on the shop’s Facebook page. We’ve also put them around the Clubhouse for you to have a look at and see who you’ve drawn for the next few days. There are a few names are still available, so if you want to be in it to win it, then come and see us.

Then on Tuesday morning I ventured up to Burnham and Berrow Golf Club for the last counting Order of Merit event of the season, I seem to have been a bit unlucky with the weather this year! An early afternoon tee time on Tuesday saw lovely sunny conditions, but the wind picked up a great deal.

Another early morning start on Wednesday and guess what? As I hit my opening shot from the 1st tee the rain started to come down and stayed with us until the 14th hole.

I seem to be jinxed with the weather this year during my term as Captain, two Pro Am’s cancelled and rainy conditions at another four events. Ok, which one of you’s been doing the rain dance?

Pro’s Day on Saturday, 26 August

The entry sheets are now up in the Gents and Ladies locker rooms for you to enter my annual Pro’s Day event, the competition is an Individual Stableford and you can play in fourballs if you wish.

The entry fee is £6.00 per member and includes a welcome pack when you sign in, also this year if you would like to invite a guest you can do and the cost for them is £12.00. The competition is open to all members of the club, including the five day membership players, we look forward to seeing you on the day.

Golf Club Results

Sorry ladies I didn’t get the results in time to put in about the Championship Day and with being away myself and didn’t get the chance to ask the Lady Captain earlier.

The gents held the Baragwaneth Trophy last Saturday and it was close at the top between three players tied on 41 points, Rob Eccleston managed the win on a back 9 score from Mike Elliott and Brian Craig.
