Good afternoon to you all

Well it’s been another week when the weather hasn’t played ball, we’ve had some nice sunny days with a strong wind blowing across the golf course and then some typical Cornish showers and mizzle to go along with it.

I’ll be glad to see the back of August and hopefully as we approach September we look forward to an Indian summer, oh god please.

New in-store this week

Lots of new equipment came through the door this week, which included the brand new Odyssey O Works Red range.

So far in stock we have the ever popular # 7 and 2 Ball models, but also a further 4 new models to come flying in soon. If you would like to try out any of our putter range then please pop on in and take them out onto the putting green for a trial.

This has been followed in by the brand new Mizuno MP-18 irons, and don’t they look stunning, we have four different styles for you to try via our Mizuno DNA fitting cart. Pictured below we have the MP-18 MMC FliHi / MP-18 SC & the MP-18 MMC Titanium.

If you would like to come along to our free of charge Mizuno fitting event then please pop into the Pro Shop and make an appointment for Friday 8th September from 1.00pm onwards. But please be quick as these events generally fill up very quickly, so don’t lose out on trying out these fantastic new models.

Both summer and golf can be frustrating at times!

This week I’ve had another two West Region PGA Pro Ams.

First of all I returned home on Sunday to the course where I learnt the game, Tehidy Park, another wet and miserable day greeted the players and sadly another couple of poor holes cost me two double bogeys for a six over par round of 77. The event was won with a 3 under par 68 and that was the only score to break par on the day.

Then on Wednesday I once again travelled up to Woodbury Park for their re-scheduled Pro Am after the original date was called off due to flooding. Oh how great this summer weather has been. Sadly a 4 over par score left me just outside the prize money and once again two double bogeys and 2 x 3 putts on par 5s after hitting both of the greens in two; God how frustrating this game can be!

But we move forwards to Yelverton and Falmouth next week and hopefully home advantage may play a part.

Course news

Surveying the land...

On Tuesday our new Head Greenkeeper, Richard Rhodes popped in to spend the day with Simon going around the course to see what Simon and his team do on a day to day basis and also to have a look around the Greenkeeping Shed to survey the machinery that they currently use around the course. I’m sure that within time Richard will make some changes to the way the course is set up, very much like when Simon started some ten years ago. One of the first major changes that Simon made was to remove the scalloped fairways that we had previously had and this was met with some great comments from members and visitors alike.

Let’s wait and see what Richard brings to the course. But we must remember he will need time, these things do not happen overnight.

What a week we have in store!

We have a busy few days coming up with the Bank Holiday weekend approaching. First of all tomorrow we have the Ladies Summer Open taking place, this is followed on Saturday with my Pro’s Day for the members.

At this moment in time we have a current field of 120 players, but if you haven’t got your name down then please pop into the gents or ladies lockers rooms as we still have some spaces available.

My thanks go to Callaway who have donated an Epic Driver as the main raffle prize for my Pro’s Day and Pro Am combined. This golf club is worth some £429.00 and tickets will be priced at £5.00 each with all money raised going towards my charities, other raffle prizes have been donated for the day.

Then moving onto next week we have the West Region PGA Pro Am on Wednesday with 22 teams down to play. My thanks go to Dave Tangye from DJR Roof Trusses who is sponsoring the event.

We hope to raise a few more pounds for my chosen charities this year which are the Motor Neurone Disease Association and the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

Mo Hammonds wins Ladies Championship Day

First of all I must pop in a further result from Ladies Championship Day, which sadly got missed off my last newsletter.

Congratulations go to Mo Hammond who won the best nett score over 36 holes.

The weekend's winners were...

Last Saturday, the gents played for the Bearne Bowl and also the second round of the Rider Cup. The winner of the Bearne Bowl on the day was club stalwart, Brian Craig with a nett 66, who just pipped our Club Captain Scott Pedlar and Grant Nicholls who both shot a nett 67. With regards the Rider Cup which was a 36 hole medal played over a couple of Saturdays recently, the winner with a nett score of 67 and 68 was Arthur Clay.

Wednesday saw the playing of an additional comp to help raise funds for Mike Hodges’ granddaughter, Tilly to go away and help Raleigh International. With your generosity over £800 was raised, so thank you to one and all who supported the event.
