Welcome to another exciting edition of the weekly newsletter bringing you all of the latest goings-on from around the club. Enjoy this week's read.

Club news 

Spring is almost here

By the time you receive next week’s newsletter, the first two months of the year will have gone by and what an awful January and February it’s been. But with Easter at the end of the month and the first main Saturday tournament arriving as well, we can hopefully look forward to warmer and better playing conditions and grass tees (fingers crossed). Then the week after Easter, all us golfers will be buzzing, because it’s the first Major of the year with the Masters. So who will follow Sergio in donning the Green Jacket ?

Well here is some interesting info for you, the winner at the Dubai Desert Classic for the last two years then went on to win the Masters in the same year –

2016 -    Won in Dubai – Danny Willett who then went on to win at the Masters

2017 -    Won in Dubai – Sergio Garcia who then went on to win at the Masters

2018 -    Won in Dubai – Haotong Li – so will he become the first Chinese player to win a Major ?

Also in the lead up to the first major of the year, we will be running our usual sweepstake from the Pro Shop. If draw a raffle ticket and your ticket number corresponds to the draw sheet order on the Thursday, this will then be your player for the four days. So keep your eyes peeled for the posters dotted around the club.

Motocaddy

With the weather the way it’s been over the past few weeks, trolley sales have been a tad quiet, especially with a number of you deciding to just take a few clubs out in a carry bag.

Well Spring must be on the way with Nick Brown picking up his new Motocaddy S1 with Lithium battery this morning.

Nick is guaranteed no issues at all with a 2 year warranty on the trolley and charger, and a full 5 years on the Lithium battery, but just in case he needs some backup, we have available the Courtesy Cart for him to use.

Get a Grip on your Game

To start the golfing season off we are offering you the chance to have a 7 iron re-gripped FREE OF CHARGE. You can have one of the new Golf Pride Align grips fitted in either the MCC +4 version or the MCC Midsize. If you are unsure of what size grip fits you best then pop on in with your 7 iron and we will measure you and fit the best grip for you.

This is important because it can lead to under or over rotation of your hands during the golf swing.

Mizuno Fitting Event

We have a Mizuno fitting event coming up on Friday 9th March from 1.00pm onwards.

Simon, who is my Area Sales Manager and Custom Fitting Guru, will be on hand to advise you on the brand new models for 2018.

Whether it’s the new MP-18 iron range or the ST-180 or GT-180 wood range that you would like to trial, be quick and don’t miss out on this FREE OF CHARGE event (we already have some bookings).

Everyone who books will receive a Mizuno Tri Fold Towel on the day for just attending the event.

New Equipment Testers

If you are thinking about a new driver for this year, then why not have the opportunity to try out the latest models from Callaway and Mizuno? I’m looking for the first 12 customers through the door who are interested in trying out the new Mizuno ST-180 & GT-180 and the Callaway Rogue Drivers. Each customer will get a matching brand new golf ball from that company to try out the driver with. All we ask is that you fill out a feedback form after you have given each model a test drive.

Coaching news

Golf Access Program

This week our Junior Organiser, Mick Fox and myself met with Simon Wood to discuss the opportunity of getting Falmouth involved in the Golf Access Program.

This is to help promote the golf club to locals, both Adults and Juniors, and to get them involved into the game of golf. So the next stage is to discuss with Steve and Richard, where we have to design a shorter style of golf course for these people to play on.

This program will hopefully be rolled out over the next few weeks, but we will make sure that the program is designed to fit around the members of the club.

Ladies Group Coaching

Just a quick reminder to all of the ladies, is that next Friday morning I have arranged a Short Game Clinic on Pitching and Chip & Run shots. At this moment in time I still have a couple of spaces available, this runs from 10.00am to 11.30am at a cost of £10.00 and will include a re-cap and coffee afterwards.

Golf Club Results

After losing so many Saturday’s and Winter Leagues due to the weather, it was great to see all you members last weekend. I have to say, it hasn’t been fun not seeing anyone on what should be your competition day. Well here are the results of round 5 –

1st - Roger Weeks & Rik Shaw with 47 points
2nd - Scott Pedlar & Pete Lewis with 46 points
3rd - Robbie Eccleston & Paul Caunter with 44 points

We have two rounds left to play, which are taking place over the next two Saturdays, so fingers crossed, we will have played 7 out of the 10 rounds. It’s not what everyone had hoped for, but if you are in with a chance of claiming that top spot this year, then remember to get your names down on the entry sheets in the Gents Locker Room.

Then on Tuesday, the ladies also managed to get a competition played, with a round of their Winter League as well, this is played over 14 holes and here are the results –

1st – Barbara Roker & Ros Gutteridge with 35 points
2nd - Donna Craig & Rose Bailey with 30 points

Don't overlook its importance

For years one of the key questions when buying a new driver was: regular, stiff or x-stiff? It goes to show that people have always known that the shaft needs to be considered, but how much importance should we place on it?

Correct shaft, better statistics
Do you want to hit more fairways this season? The two ball flights you can see below perfectly display the risks of using a shaft flex or shaft weight that’s poorly matched to your swing speed.

Course Illustration

A shaft that is too stiff or heavy will likely lead to a lower ball flight that can leak right (like the red arrow), whereas a shaft that is too light or flexible often kills distance and causes hooks (like the white arrow). Working together it won’t take long to narrow down the best shafts to optimise your distance and accuracy, helping you to hit more fairways.

Mizuno GT180 driver

Getting the right head to match the shaft will also play a big part, and one we could try is the Mizuno GT180 driver. It not only has an adjustable hosel and weights we can use to find you a straighter, piercing ball flight, but we can also use Mizuno’s Swing DNA fitting system to measure your essential swing data in just three drives for a quicker and more accurate fitting.

When and why?

When it comes to golf equipment, there are very few things we see neglected as much as grips, which is surprising when you consider they are your only point of contact with the club. If you keep on reading you’ll find out why it’s important to keep your grips in good condition and when you should look to replace them, as well as an offer that we're currently running in-store.

When should you consider a regrip?
Small amounts of wear occur with each use of your grips and it’s easy to miss early warning signs. As a rule-of-thumb, your grips should be replaced every 40 rounds, but this can be sooner if you practice regularly. For most of you, that would mean replacing your grips every year.

Why regrip?
Worn grips force you to hold the club tighter than usual, increasing pressure and tension in your hands, wrists and arms. This reduces the head speed you can create and therefore your distance. However, using a tacky grip that matches the size of your hands – no, it’s not one size fits all – will cater for a lighter pressure and give you more confidence on every swing.
