Course news

Pole dancing

Take a look at this video, shot at Fairmount Hot Springs Resort and Golf Course in British Columbia, Canada. It looks as though this little bear was enjoying himself playing with a flagstick on one of the greens. Seems like the golfers didn’t want to ask him to repair his paw marks! PS: You have to keep watching for the good bit!

Weather Report

Well, last weekend was once again ruined by the weather.

Saturday was supposed to be our Final Winter League was abandoned due to heavy rain overnight, once again leaving the course unplayable.

Results will be posted later in this newsletter.

Then on Sunday afternoon, the Beast from the East 2.0 returned bringing snow to Falmouth for the second time in a matter of a couple of weeks. It was so weird - that Sunday morning Debbie and I were walking on Perranporth beach with not the slightest indication of what was to arrive only a few hours later. Then by late afternoon we popped up to the club for a wonder around in the snow.

Then by Tuesday morning some normality had returned, the course was back open with full temporaries in play. Therefore here is a quick update for the month of March so far – Rainfall Totals @ 89.5mm & Snow Totals @ lots, very rare in the past for Cornwall.

Broadcast Messages

Over the past couple of months, you will have been receiving an early morning broadcast message from the Pro Shop to let you know of course conditions on the day. Over the next week or so when the course and weather improves these messages will stop, unless something urgent pops up, but I will remind you of Course Maintenance Week which is due to take place in mid April.

Driver Fitting

With the weather over last weekend, it was a quiet few days in the shop, but on Friday I did manage to do a driver fitting with Dave Walsh.

He was interested in trying out the new Callaway Rogue. We did the fitting over on the practice area using the Foresight Sports GC2 Launch Monitor and following a few tweaks to the set up on the driver, we upped his loft from 10.5* to 11.5*. We also put a 1* draw bias setting helping him to hit the ball more consistently with a better flight.

New Staff Member

I’m glad to announce that golf club member, Scott Pedlar has joined to team to assist in the Pro Shop along with Rob and Kathy, when she returns to work following her time away. Scott is a great addition to the team and plays off a handicap of 11 and of course was last year’s Club Captain.

Tour news

Arnold Palmer Invitational

The European Tour players did fantastically well in last week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational. Rory, Henrik and Justin were all in contention and that chap Tiger in the frame again as well. In the end Rory put together a stunning finish with 5 birdies in the last 8 holes to record an 18 under par total, thus finishing 3 clear of Bryson DeChambeau. He, in turn, beat Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson by 1 and 2 shots respectively.

This week they move onto the Dell Technologies Matchplay event at Austin Golf and Country Club in Texas. The World Number 1, Dustin Johnson will be the defending champion.

Competition news

Competition Results

As in the weather report, our Final Winter League was lost to the weather and therefore the results were done on the best 4 out of 6 rounds played instead of the usual 10 games.

1st - Steve Jones with 79 points

2nd - Peter Lewis with 77 points

3rd - Roger Weeks with 75 points

4th - Mike Watmore with 71 points

On Tuesday the Ladies played their yearly grudge match between the Lady Captain’s Team, lead by Rachael Curnow & Lady Vice Captain’s Team of Jo Munday, in what was amazing weather a total of 26 ladies took part in a Matchplay event. The Vice Captain’s team won by 5 matches to 2, with everybody having a great day out on the links.
