Westwood wins again

Lee Westwood rolled back the years to claim his first European Tour title since 2014, as he shot a flawless final round of 64 to win the Nedbank Challenge. The Englishman carded six birdies and an eagle on Sunday, finishing three shots clear of overnight leader Sergio Garcia, who finished on 12-under.

Westwood, who is a former World Number One, mentioned in his post-round interview that he has "got a bit of a process" he’s going through with his golf swing, which is helping him see and hit better shots. It goes to show that it’s never too late to make swing changes, even if you’re a top golfer.

Just remarkable...

With the new Rules of Golf coming into play in January 2019, it’s more important than ever to pay close attention to the laws of the game; something which European Tour hopeful Gian-Marco Petrozzi found out the hard way last week.

Petrozzi missed out on a potential place in the final stage of Q-School, after being penalised two strokes for ‘improving his line of play’. The Englishman was playing his final hole and had to hit a shot over a fairway bunker – to pace his yardage, he walked through the bunker and then raked his footprints in the sand before hitting his shot, resulting in an infringement of Rule 13-2 (improving your line of play).

If you’re ever unsure of a ruling whilst out on the course, be sure to give the pro shop a call or come and speak to us after your round.

Ready, steady, golf!

The proposed changes to the Rules of Golf are just around the corner, so we thought we’d look at one introduction which is designed to speed up your pace of play around the course…

With the introduction of ‘Ready Golf’ (5.6b), you’ll be encouraged to enjoy a quicker round of golf. There will be a recommendation that a stroke should take no more than 40 seconds, along with players being allowed to play 'out of turn' to speed up the round. Essentially, when you're ready to play and the rest of your playing group is happy for you to do so, you can get on with the main business at hand of actually playing golf.

Buried alive!

One of the enduring memories from this year's Ryder Cup was how brutal the rough was at Le Golf National; sometimes it was impossible to even see the ball once it landed in the first cut. This led to a lot of buried lies for players on both teams, which is something you’ll be dealing with yourself this winter...

These lies can lead to scorecard-wreckers, so it's important you know how to get your ball back into play when out on the course.

Firstly, don't be greedy! Make sure you take a lofted club - a wedge for example - which will help get you out of trouble. A lesser lofted club won’t get the ball in the air quickly enough, as the club comes in at too shallow an angle, resulting in it getting caught up in the grass behind the ball.

You should also make sure you play the ball further back in your stance, which encourages a steeper angle of attack to elevate the ball out of the grass nice and quickly, ensuring you can play your next shot from the fairway.
